Among newcomers and returning players, Griffey is well behind the dynamic duo at the top—Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. Based on statistics alone, and not taking into account the other issues with these two guys, Bonds and Clemens are head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field.
Griffey would be in the next tier down with Jeff Bagwell, Mike Mussina, and Curt Schilling.
Edgar Martinez would be in the tier below Griffey, along with Tim Raines and Mike Piazza, among others.
I expect Griffey will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Hopefully, he can say something nice about Edgar Martinez at his induction speech next summer. Edgar did hit “the double” after all.
