Unfortunately, the two catchers now on the Major League Roster don’t offer much hope.
Here are the stats for Zunino and the new starting catcher, Jesus Sucre:
2015: .174 AVG, .230 OBP, .300 SLG
Career: .193 AVG, .252 OBP, .353 SLG
2015: .097 AVG, .125 OBP, .177 SLG
Career: .161 AVG, .182 OBP, .208 SLG
The new backup is John Hicks, who has never played in the Major Leagues. In AAA this year, Hicks hit .245, with a .282 on-base percentage, and a .362 slugging percentage. That’s not good at all.
Catcher has been a black hole of offense for the team. Despite sending Zunino down, it won’t get better. He’s actually the best option they have.
That being said, this is a lost season for the team anyway, so they might as well see if Zunino can do anything in the minor leagues over the next 11 days (that’s when the season ends). He’ll be back up in September flailing away at sliders on the outside part of the plate.
